When a truck gearbox fails, fleets usually weigh three paths: buy new, buy a specialist reconditioned unit (often on exchange), or try a DIY parts-only rebuild in their own bay. The cheapest invoice line is not always the cheapest downtime. A brand-new OEM gearbox is the cleanest technical choice when budget and lead time allow. You pay the top rate and you wait for the correct unit. For many South African operators that wait is measured in weeks, not hours, especially on less common ratios. New is right when the casing is scrap, the duty cycle is extreme, or policy demands an OEM-new replacement — not when a sound housing can be rebuilt to OEM tolerances at a fraction of the price.
